Borussia Dortmund Football Shirt

Borussia Dortmund, otherwise known as BVB, were founded in 1909 and have won 8 German Championships. They also became the first German side to win a European Competition with their victory in the 1966 Cup Winners Cup. The club won the European Cup in 1997 but then suffered a troubled financial period and even received assistance from rivals Bayern Munich. Dortmund are one of the largest clubs in Germany and have been in our top 10 sellers for the past several years.

BVB, known worldwide for their famous yellow wall, play their football at the Welfalenstadion which is the largest football stadium in Germany. They are a considerable force in German Football but have become somewhat of a feeder club to Bayern Munich in recent years with the sales of Mats Hummels, Mario Gotze and Robert Lewandowski. Despite this, they were still able to set a Bundesliga record in the 2015-16 season by tallying the highest number of points by a runner-up in a single season.

Borussia Dortmund Home Shirt

Dortmunds nickname ‘die schwarzgelkben’ which literally translates as ‘The Black and Yellows’ goes a long way to explain why their home jersey has always consisted of those 2 colours. The Home shirt has been worn by some greats over the years including their record appearance holder Michael Zorc and record goal scorer Alfred Preissler.

The very first Dortmund shirts were not actually yellow but featured white and blue vertical stripes. It was only after the merger of three local clubs with Borussia in 1912 that a decision was made that the famous “zitronengelb” (lemon yellow) of one of the clubs (Rhenania) should be adopted as the first choice kit of the newly formed Borussia Dortmund.

Traditionally, the shorts and socks consist of the yellow and black also and compliment the shirt nicely. In recent years, especially after the appearance in the Champions league final in 2012/13, UKSoccershop has experienced a sharp incline in sales with Dortmund’s shirts and with players like Mario Gotze returning, BVB will expect to maintain their status as a top European football giant in the years to come.

Borrusia Dortmund Away shirt

In the past, Dortmund have worn a number of colours as their away shirt with red, white, purple and grey all being used as the club’s change kit. However, in the more recent history, black has been the predominant colour chosen to represent the away jersey. However, the BVB Away Kit is less significant than the alternate kit as most teams. Such is the distinctive nature of the yellow home jersey that they rarely have to wear an away strip because no other Bundesliga club wears yellow, so colour clashes are virtually never a problem.

Dortmund Shirt History

BVB were one of the major beneficiaries of Nike’s venture into the football market in the early 1990’s. Previously unknown in the soccer market, the American sportswear giants signed a number of teams including Brazil, Italy and Arsenal. In Germany, Dortmund became the focus of the Nike marketing campaign and challenged the mould with some unique and innovative designs. The funds generated from Nike’s sponsorship helped Dortmund win their first Bundesliga title in 32 years in 1995. They won it again in 1996 and the following season they would go on to win the European Cup, beating Juventus in the final.

After an ill-fated spell manufacturing their own kits through BVB owned company, Dortmund faced severe financial troubles as a result of overspending in the early 2000s and were on the brink of bankruptcy in 2005 when they returned to Nike. The contract lasted until 2009 until Italian sportswear brand Kappa signed a three year deal which would co-incide with the start of the Klopp era.

In 2012, BVB signed an 8 year deal for Puma to become their main kit suppliers. Despite this change, the one thing that has remained constant is the ever present yellow and black on the jersey. Puma’s commitment to a long-term partnership was underlined when they bought a 5% stake in the club.
