Players who wear One Love armbands at the Qatar World Cup may risk being booked before kick-off for breaching FIFA’s equipment rules.

Captains of nine European nations, including England’s Harry Kane, Wales’ Gareth Bale and Germany’s Manuel Neuer, were planning to wear the One Love armbands promoting inclusivity and LGBTQ+ rights in Qatar, a country which criminalises same-sex relationships.

Reports in Bild suggest that the DFB is now considering whether Neuer should wear the armband given the potential consequences, while Kane is expected to wear the armband for England’s clash with Iran on Monday.

The current FIFA equipment rules state that: ‘At FIFA tournaments, match staff must wear official clothing and equipment provided by FIFA, including FIFA event badges specified and provided by FIFA.’

Unofficial clothing such as the One Love armbands could be deemed illegal, and players wearing them could be fined or shown yellow cards.

Mark Bullingham, Chief Executive of the FA, has previously said that England are willing to be fined for wearing the armband.

He said it was ‘sad’ that many  LGBTQ+ England fans had not come to Qatar as a result of concerns about Qatar, and that is was ‘really important to show our values.’

The FA asked FIFA for permission to wear the One Love armband last month, but received no repsonse.

FIFA has launched their own captain’s armband in response, as part of a social campaign run alongside the United Nations that will promote a different campaign for each round of the tournament.

The theme for the quarter finals will be ‘no discrimination’, but there is no mention of LGBTQ+ rights in any of the campaigns.
